Skills for employment

It is not enough to just pass exams, as important that is; you will also need skills that will make you employable.   We recommend that students acquire vocational skills in addition to academic skills to prepare them for the real world.   Here are some of the skills you will need:

  • interpersonal skills (strengths/weaknesses, time management, stress management, body language etc)
  • spelling, punctuation and grammar skills
  • creating a Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • writing a cover letter
  • reading comprehension skills
  • foundation maths skills
  • critical thinking
  • budgeting and money management skills

Transferable Skills

Transferable skills as the name implies are skills that you can take from job to job.  You do not suddenly stop spelling correctly because you have changed jobs.  This, of course, assumes that you were able to spell in the first place.

Trnasferable or evergreen skills are those that you will need regardless of your role or job.  Examples include:

  • Literacy Skills
  • Numeracy Skills
  • Verbal and Written Communication (would also fall under Literacy)
  • Team Work
  • Managing Your Money
  • Dealing With Stress

At the African Virtual School, our transferable skills products focus on maths and English.
